The questionIs the India-China thaw delivering border security and fairer trade, or deepening India's dependence on China?
How we got here
Indian and Chinese troops fought a deadly clash in the Galwan Valley in eastern Ladakh in June 2020, freezing ties. On 21 October 2024 India announced an agreement with China on patrolling along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), the de facto border, and PM Narendra Modi met President Xi Jinping in Kazan, Russia, two days later. They met again in Tianjin, China, in August 2025. Since then the two sides have restarted talks on the border, trade and travel, including the Special Representatives talks led by India's National Security Adviser and China's Foreign Minister. Old disputes remain. China claims Arunachal Pradesh and issues 'stapled visas' (a loose paper visa instead of a passport stamp) to its residents, is building a mega-dam on the Yarlung Tsangpo-Brahmaputra river upstream of India, and sells India far more than it buys. In September 2026 the two armies held their first corps commander talks in the eastern sector, amid reported tensions in Arunachal Pradesh's Taksing area. Between August and October 2026 the two sides held border talks in Beijing, Xi visited Delhi for the BRICS summit, and new rows broke out over place names in Ladakh and a visa for an Arunachal athlete.
India bought $125.19 billion of Chinese goods in January-September 2026 and sold $19.26 billion, so Indian factories rely heavily on Chinese electronics, machinery and inputs, and Chinese export curbs on items from fertilisers to rare earths can disrupt production. Border arrangements affect the safety of troops on the LAC, river data from China matters for flood warnings in India's northeast, and stapled visas keep some Arunachal athletes from competing in China.
Where each side stands
The MEA says ties have made 'steady progress' and that differences 'should not become disputes'. PM Modi told Xi that border peace is the 'essential basis' for relations, which should be guided by 'mutual respect, mutual sensitivity and mutual interest'. India calls Ladakh and Arunachal Pradesh integral parts of India, rejects China's objections, and wants China to address the trade imbalance and market access.
Press Information Bureau · The Indian Express · The New Indian Express · The HinduThe Congress says the government's China policy amounts to 'calibrated capitulation'. Jairam Ramesh cites Galwan, alleged Chinese advances in Ladakh and Arunachal Pradesh, China's support for Pakistan during Operation Sindoor, China's Medog mega-dam on the Brahmaputra and the widening trade deficit, and says the Prime Minister has not answered these questions.
The Hindu · India TodayChina says Xi and Modi reached the 'important consensus' that the two countries 'should be partners' and will jointly keep the border peaceful. Its readout said India's positions on Taiwan and Tibet remain unchanged. China says it has never recognised the 'so-called Union Territory of Ladakh' and calls India's new place names 'illegal and void'.

- ?Whether the expert groups set up in August produce an 'early harvest' on the boundary, and when.
- ?Whether India relaxes curbs on Chinese investment, which BusinessLine reported Beijing is pressing for.
- ?Whether the planned September meeting on rivers that cross the border took place; our sources do not confirm it.
