National Security Adviser Ajit Doval raised the safety of Indian seafarers and tankers in a call with Iran's security chief Mohsen Rezaei on 12 October 2026, the MEA said on 14 October. Between 1 and 11 October at least four ships with Indian crews were attacked in the Strait of Hormuz. On 15 October India's UN envoy Harish Parvathaneni told the Security Council that attacks on shipping and seafarers 'must cease'.

What it means for India

One in eight seafarers worldwide is Indian, so attacks on Gulf shipping put many Indian families at risk. Raising the issue with Iran and at the UN is India's main way to press for their protection.
